Patio chair is a good friend to have for leisure time. It’s flexibility and reliability makes this furniture important. We have created a DIY tutorial for you so that you can make a patio chair yourself. The seat’s height is about 16 inch. There is about 22-inch room between the armrests. So you will have plenty of room to be comfortable. So, let’s get on with it.
If you want to build a patio chair, you will need some tools. These are the necessary tools that you will need.
- Miter Saw (12 inches recommended)
- Table Saw
- Circular Saw
- Impact Driver
- Orbital Sander
- Carpenter Square
Except these, you will also need some safety related products. Such as masks, guards, gloves, etc.
The raw supplies you will need are,
- Wood planks
- Wood screws
- Wood glue
- Wood putty
The recommended type of wood is cedar or redwood. But to minimise the cost, you can use pine, fir, spruce, etc. But you will need to coat it with extra paint. And also you will need to maintain it more to keep it from rotting out.
First, we need to make the legs. Complete the measures and mark them according to the plan. Take some extra wood so that you will be able to fix your mistakes. Care about the thickness and width of the boards. They depend on your choice. Now cut the pieces using a jigsaw.
Connect 2 boards in each front leg. Connect the notches. Use carpenter square to make everything aligned. Here comes the most important part. Always drill before cutting the woods. Because they might split if you do these after. Use high-quality drills. You can click here to learn more about the recommendations and quality threshold.
Now let’s work with the armrests. Flip the chair upside down. By doing this, you will get a flat surface. It will make your work easier. Now connect the armrest with the front legs with wood glue and enough screws.
Now it’s time to connect the rear legs. Cut the rear legs the same way you’ve cut the front legs. But you need to consider angles. The best angle to consider is 15 degrees. Use clamps to test if your leg angles are alright. The rear leg must be aligned with the leg. And the legs also have to be perfect with the ground. Connect the legs and make sure the corner of the support board is flush with the front of the rear leg. The support should also be horizontal to the ground.
It’s time for seat support. You should have three seat support. Connect them at a cross alignment on the support board. Use screws for more strength in this section.
We also need backrest support. Cut 2 boards at an orientation of 15 degrees. Curve out a side of the boards to give them an aesthetic look. Then place them on the support boards. Then connect them with the seat support boards and armrests with screws.
Now let’s make seat and chair back. Take a total of 8 boards and cut them according to the other parts so that your back will fit. Connect them with the support planks with screws. Connect the 2 armrests with a screw as well. Cut the 2 sides of the armrests in a circular shape to make it more comfortable.
Finish your creation with wood putty at the connections. Use sandpaper and sander to make the planks smooth and comfortable. Lastly, paint the chair with your favorite color. Now you have a patio chair to seat in and relax.
